10 Places You Must Visit in Montenegro in Summer 2026

Montenegro fits a fjord-like bay, a beach riviera, a two-thousand-meter mountain range and Europe's deepest canyon into a country you can cross in an afternoon. That density is the whole point: nowhere else on the Adriatic can you swim below Venetian walls in the morning and stand above a glacial lake before dinner. Here are the ten places that prove it, coast first, mountains after.

1. Kotor: the walled town at the end of the bay

At the innermost bend of its famous bay, Kotor hides a UNESCO-listed old town of squares, palaces and cats behind medieval walls. The essential effort is the fortress climb: around 1,350 steps up the hillside ladder of San Giovanni, best attacked at 7 a.m. or in the evening, with the bay unrolling silver beneath you. 2. Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks

Ten minutes from Kotor, tiny Perast is one street of stone palaces facing two islets. Boats shuttle to Our Lady of the Rocks, the man-made island the town has been reinforcing with sunken stones for five centuries; its church museum and the story alone are worth the ride. Stay for a waterfront dinner when the day-trippers leave and the bay goes still.

3. Budva: beaches by day, the liveliest nights on the coast

Budva is Montenegro's summer engine: a Venetian old town on a peninsula, town beaches that fill by ten, and the coast's biggest nightlife. Walk the seaside path to Mogren beach below the cliffs, and take the panoramic road above town for the postcard view of the walls in the sea. If you want quiet, base yourself in Bečići or Rafailovići next door and visit Budva in the evening.

4. Sveti Stefan: the island on every Montenegro poster

The fortified islet of Sveti Stefan, tied to the coast by a sandy isthmus, is the country's most photographed sight and our cover shot. 5. Ulcinj: the Albanian south and its endless sand

Montenegro's southernmost town swaps bay drama for warmth: a two-thousand-year-old fortress above the town beach, almost 13 kilometers of sand at Velika Plaža, kitesurfing at the Bojana river mouth and flamingos in the old salt flats. 6. Skadar Lake: lilies, wine and the famous river bend

The Balkans' largest lake spreads across the border between Montenegro and Albania in a maze of lily fields, fish villages and island monasteries. Take a morning boat from Virpazar, then drive to the viewpoint above Rijeka Crnojevića for the horseshoe river bend that fills every Montenegro brochure. 7. Lovćen: the mausoleum above the clouds

Njegoš's mausoleum sits on a Lovćen peak at more than 1,600 meters, up a final staircase through the rock. On a clear day the view takes in the bay, the lake and half of Montenegro. Drive up from Cetinje, the old royal capital, and if you have steady nerves, descend toward Kotor on the historic serpentine road: 25 numbered hairpins with the bay filling the windshield.

8. Durmitor and the Tara canyon: the mountain day the coast needs

Two and a half hours from the sea, the Durmitor massif holds the Black Lake, forest trails and via-ferrata peaks, while the Tara river cuts Europe's deepest canyon, 1,300 meters at its deepest, crossed by the elegant Đurđevića bridge. Raft the Tara's rapids in summer for the canyon from water level, or just drive the rim road and use up your phone storage.

9. Ostrog Monastery: the church built into a cliff

White against a vertical rock face high above the Zeta valley, Ostrog is the Balkans' most dramatic monastery and a pilgrimage site for all faiths. The upper monastery's cave chapels and the panorama over the valley justify the winding drive up. Dress modestly and go early, because by midday the buses arrive from every direction.

10. Herceg Novi: stairs, flowers and the bay's open mouth

At the entrance of the bay, Herceg Novi climbs its hillside in stairways through botanical-garden greenery. Locals call it the city of a hundred thousand steps. Three fortresses, a palm-lined promenade and boat trips to the Blue Cave and the beaches of the Luštica peninsula make it the relaxed alternative to Kotor's crowds.

When to go
