Does an eSIM Expire? When Validity Starts and What Happens When the Data Runs Out

Kudo eSIM TeamPublished 3 min read

No. An eSIM does not expire while it sits unused: the plan's validity starts not at purchase but at the first connection to a network abroad. A plan bought today can sit untouched for weeks without losing a day. When the data or the validity days run out, the connection stops and you can top up with a new plan.

A phone on a cafe table abroad showing the eSIM data usage screen mid trip

The question usually lands two weeks before the trip: I bought the eSIM today, am I burning days already? No. The validity clock does not start when you pay. It starts the moment your phone connects to a network abroad for the first time.

Two clocks people mix up: purchase day and first connection

The day you pay counts for nothing. The plan sits dormant on your phone until you land and the eSIM latches onto its first foreign network. That moment starts the clock. So you can buy a week or a month ahead without losing a single day, and that is also the calmest way to do it: the QR arrives instantly on screen and by email, you install it under Settings > Add eSIM, it activates in about 30 seconds, on your home WiFi, with no airport stress.

How long a Kudo eSIM plan lasts

  • Most fixed-data Europe + Region plans come with 45 days of validity, and some options run up to 60 days.
  • For long stays there are 180-day and 365-day options, which suit students, seasonal work or extended visits to family.
  • Unlimited (Pa Limit) plans are measured in time rather than gigabytes and run 3, 7, 14 or 30 days.
  • Unused data does not roll over past the validity window: when the period ends, the plan ends with it.
  • Hotspot is allowed on fixed-data plans, but not on unlimited (Pa Limit) plans.

What happens when the data or the days run out

Nothing dramatic, and no surprise bill. The eSIM simply stops serving data. Your physical SIM stays in the phone, so your home number, your bank SMS codes and WhatsApp keep working exactly as before. The only thing you lose is mobile data, until you top up or buy again.

  • Europe + Region plans are topped up straight in the app and need no new QR code, because the eSIM already on your phone keeps working.
  • The Kosovo plans are single-use and cannot be topped up, so when the data ends you simply buy a new package.
  • If you are already out of data, connect to hotel or cafe WiFi and complete the top-up or purchase from there.
  • Topping up while you are still online is far easier than waiting until you are completely disconnected.

Deleting the eSIM is the one mistake you cannot undo

If you delete the eSIM from your phone settings, it does not come back with a tap in the app. You need a new QR code to install it again. So the rule is simple: never delete a plan you still intend to use or top up. If you just do not want it running right now, turn off mobile data for that line and leave it in place. Delete it only when you are certain you are finished with it.

Why buying ahead costs you nothing

Since the clock only starts at your first connection abroad, there is no reason to leave this for the airport. Buy a few days early, install it calmly at home, check that the line appears in your settings, then forget about it. When the plane lands, switch mobile data to the Kudo line and you are online. Kudo eSIM has been the first eSIM provider from the Balkans since 2022, covering 190+ countries with support chat available in Albanian too.

Frequently asked questions

Does an eSIM expire if you never use it?

No. The plan does not start counting days until the eSIM connects to a network abroad for the first time. A plan bought today can sit untouched for weeks without losing any validity.

When does eSIM validity start?

It starts the moment the eSIM first connects to a network abroad. It does not start on the purchase date or the installation date, which is why installing at home before your trip is completely safe.

How long does an eSIM last?

It depends on the plan: most fixed-data Europe + Region plans last 45 days, some options run 60 days, and long-stay options go to 180 and 365 days. Unlimited (Pa Limit) plans last 3, 7, 14 or 30 days.

My eSIM data ran out, what do I do now?

Top the plan up in the app if it is a Europe + Region plan, since no new QR code is needed and the existing eSIM keeps working. The Kosovo plans are single-use, so there you simply buy a new package.

Can I top up an eSIM without installing it again?

Yes, on Europe + Region plans. The top-up happens inside the app and no new QR code is issued. Kosovo plans cannot be topped up and require buying a new package.

What happens if I delete the eSIM from my phone?

Deleting it cannot be undone from the app. You would need a new QR code to install it again, so never delete a plan you still plan to use or top up later.

How do I check how much data I have left?

Open kudoesim.com/bilanci/ in Albanian or /en/balance/ in English. It shows how much data and how many validity days remain, so you can act before you lose connection.

Do unused gigabytes carry over?

No. Unused data does not carry over once the plan's validity ends. That is why it pays to match the plan length to your trip and check your balance while travelling.
