One eSIM for the Whole Umrah Journey: Kudo World for Istanbul, Dubai and Saudi Arabia

Kudo eSIM TeamPublished 7 min read

Kudo World is one eSIM for 149+ countries including Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the Emirates: 20 GB for 30 days at EUR 26.99, 50 GB at EUR 45 or 100 GB at EUR 70, with international minutes, 50 SMS and hotspot. Best for Umrah with a layover or Dubai stop and for heavy users; for a direct flight and light use, the Saudi plan from EUR 7.99 is cheaper.

Almost nobody flies to Mecca in one hop. The journey to Umrah usually touches two or three countries before the ihram goes on: a layover in Istanbul, a connection through Dubai or Doha, a few days with relatives somewhere in Europe before the flight, sometimes a short holiday in the Emirates on the way back. Each border used to mean another SIM, another counter, another setup on a parent's phone. Kudo World, our global eSIM, is the one-install answer for exactly that kind of trip. This guide explains what it covers, what it costs, and, just as honestly, when the plain Saudi Arabia plan is the better buy.

What Kudo World is, in one paragraph

One eSIM, 149 or more countries, three sizes. The 20 GB plan costs EUR 26.99 for 30 days and includes 15 minutes of international calls; the 50 GB plan costs EUR 45 for 31 days with 30 minutes; the 100 GB plan costs EUR 70 for 31 days with 60 minutes. Every plan includes 50 international SMS, hotspot without restrictions and full-speed 4G and 5G on the best local network wherever you land. Validity starts at the first connection, not at purchase, so you can buy it weeks ahead. Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the Emirates, Jordan, Albania and all of Western Europe sit in Zone 1 with the full allowance; the Gulf states Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman, plus Egypt, are Zone 2, where the 20 GB plan gives 15 GB. Kosovo is covered too, by the 20 GB plan only.

The journey, country by country

  • Istanbul layover: Turkey is in Zone 1, so the full allowance works from the moment the plane touches down, for the three-hour wait or a two-day stopover in the city.
  • Dubai or Abu Dhabi connection: the Emirates are Zone 1 as well, which also covers the increasingly popular Umrah plus Dubai combination.
  • Doha connection: Qatar is Zone 2, which on the 20 GB plan means 15 GB there; more than enough for a few hours in the terminal.
  • Saudi Arabia: Zone 1, full speed in Mecca, Medina, Jeddah and on the Haramain train, with no passport registration at any counter.
  • Jordan or Egypt added to the trip: Jordan is Zone 1, Egypt is Zone 2.
  • The way home: Albania, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the UK and the rest of Europe are Zone 1, and Kosovo works on the 20 GB plan.

Long layovers are where single-country plans go quiet. A global plan does not notice the border.

When the global plan beats the Saudi plan, and when it does not

Direct flight, ten days, a few gigabytes: take the Saudi plan

If you fly straight into Jeddah or Medina and need the Nusuk app, maps, group chat and a video call home now and then, the Saudi Arabia country plan is the cheaper and better fit: 3 GB for EUR 7.99 or 5 GB for EUR 10.99, both valid 60 days. Kudo World would work perfectly, but you would be paying for countries you never visit.

A layover plus Umrah, moderate use: close, and simpler with one plan

With an Istanbul connection, the country-plan route is a Saudi plan plus a Turkey plan from EUR 3.79: around EUR 15 for 5 GB in Saudi Arabia and 3 GB in Turkey, or about EUR 23 for 10 GB plus the Turkey plan. Kudo World's 20 GB for EUR 26.99 costs a few euros more and gives one install instead of two, twice the data, the minutes, the SMS and the hotspot. For a parent's phone that someone else sets up, the single install is usually worth the difference on its own.

Three countries or heavy use: the global plan wins outright

Add a Dubai stop to the Istanbul connection and the country plans stack up to more than EUR 30 (a 10 GB Saudi plan, a Turkey plan and a 3 GB Emirates plan) against EUR 26.99 for 20 GB everywhere. The same is true for anyone who films, calls on video daily or shares data with family: 50 GB for EUR 45 is a price no combination of country plans matches. And for pilgrims from the diaspora who fly from Germany or Switzerland through Istanbul and stop in Kosovo on the way back, the 20 GB plan covers every leg of that loop on one eSIM.

Umrah plus three days in Dubai is now a common itinerary. The Emirates are in Zone 1 with the full allowance.

For families and group leaders: hotspot and the 50 GB plan

Hotspot is allowed without restrictions on every Kudo World plan, which changes the economics for a family. One 50 GB eSIM on the most capable phone in the group can feed two or three other phones in the hotel room and on the bus, including the older phones that do not take an eSIM at all. Group leaders who keep forty people informed on chat, share live locations and send photos to families at home all day are the typical 50 GB users; the 100 GB plan with 60 minutes exists for the leaders who run two groups back to back inside a month.

One install for the whole route is the strongest argument when someone else sets up the phone.

Calls and SMS included: what the minutes are really for

Country plans are data only. Kudo World adds 15, 30 or 60 minutes of international calls and 50 SMS, and on pilgrimage those minutes have a specific job: calling the hotel reception when the group is late, the agency's emergency number, the airline, the driver who is not at the meeting point. Everyday calls with the family still belong on video over data, which the plan has plenty of. Keep the home SIM in the phone as well, with its data roaming off, so your usual number keeps receiving bank codes and the group leader's calls.

Daily video calls home are the biggest data user on an Umrah trip; 20 GB covers two weeks of them.

Validity: 30 days from the first connection

The clock starts when the eSIM connects to a network for the first time, not when you buy, so purchasing early costs nothing. It does mean two practical rules. First, install the eSIM when you arrive, or install it at home and keep the line switched off until the plane lands; this matters most in Kosovo and Albania, where the plan works and an early test connection would start the 30 days before you leave. Second, Kudo World suits trips of up to a month. Pilgrims on a multiple-entry Umrah visa who stay five or six weeks, and anyone planning Hajj, are better served by the Saudi Arabia plans with 60 days of validity, up to 20 GB for EUR 31.99.

Setting it up: five steps

  • Buy the plan online; the QR code and the direct-install link arrive by email within seconds.
  • Install it on the pilgrim's phone over Wi-Fi, at home with the line turned off, or on arrival. Name the line World so it is easy to find.
  • On landing, turn the World line on, set it as the data line and switch data roaming on for that line only. The eSIM picks the best local network by itself.
  • Leave the home SIM in place for calls and SMS codes, with its own data roaming off.
  • Never delete the eSIM from the phone: a deleted eSIM cannot be recovered. Keep the email with the QR code, and contact support in chat for anything else.

The honest limits

  • Validity is 30 or 31 days. Longer stays belong on the 60-day Saudi Arabia plans.
  • Kosovo is covered only by the 20 GB plan; the 50 GB and 100 GB plans do not work there.
  • Zone 2 countries such as Qatar, Egypt, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain get a reduced allowance: 15 GB on the 20 GB plan.
  • There is no local Saudi number; calls run on the included international minutes or over the internet.
  • In Saudi Arabia, voice and video calls inside messaging apps can be unreliable in peak periods, whatever the eSIM. Agree on a backup app with your family; our guide to internet in Saudi Arabia covers the details.

Frequently asked questions

Does Kudo World work in Saudi Arabia for Umrah?

Yes. Saudi Arabia is in Zone 1 with the full allowance: 20 GB for 30 days at EUR 26.99, 50 GB at EUR 45 or 100 GB at EUR 70, with international minutes, 50 SMS and hotspot. It connects on landing with no passport registration, and the same eSIM keeps working in Turkey, the Emirates and 149+ other countries.

Is Kudo World cheaper than the Saudi Arabia plan?

Not for a direct flight with light use: the Saudi plan gives 3 GB for EUR 7.99 or 5 GB for EUR 10.99 with 60 days of validity. Kudo World wins when the trip crosses two or more countries, when you need 20 GB or more, or when you want calls, SMS and hotspot on a single install.

Does it work during the Istanbul layover and in Dubai?

Yes. Turkey and the Emirates are both Zone 1, so the full allowance applies there, and the eSIM switches to the local network automatically at each landing. Qatar, for a Doha connection, is Zone 2 with 15 GB on the 20 GB plan.

Can I share the data with my family's phones?

Yes. Hotspot and tethering are allowed without restrictions on all three plans, so one 50 GB eSIM can serve several phones in the hotel room and on the bus, including older phones without eSIM support.

When should I install it?

Validity starts at the first connection, not at purchase, so buy early and install on arrival, or install at home with the line switched off until you land. In Kosovo and Albania the plan works locally, so an early test connection would start the 30 days before departure.

Is it suitable for a stay longer than a month, or for Hajj?

No. Kudo World is valid 30 or 31 days. For five or six weeks on a multiple-entry Umrah visa, or for Hajj, the Saudi Arabia plans with 60 days of validity are the right fit, up to 20 GB for EUR 31.99.
